Beautiful curls begin with understanding.
A Curly Haircut That Works With Your Natural Texture
Your curls are individual. Your haircut should be too.
The Shizen Cut — $150
At my private hair atelier in Deception Bay, I offer a considered approach to curly haircutting, guided by more than 40 years of hairdressing and education experience.
If you’ve ever left a salon with a haircut that looked beautiful until you washed it, or struggled to find a hairdresser who genuinely understands your natural texture, you’re not alone.
Perhaps your curls have been cut too short, your layers don’t sit properly, or you’ve been left with a shape that feels impossible to manage at home.
You don’t need another haircut that fights against your natural curls. You need someone who understands how they behave.
My philosophy is simple: work with your hair’s natural movement, not against it.
Your Curls Aren’t the Problem. The Approach Might Be.
Curly hair has its own character. It springs, bends, contracts and moves differently depending on its texture, density, growth patterns and natural formation. And not every curl on your head behaves the same way.
You might recognise some of these frustrations:
- Your curls look uneven after washing.
- Your haircut becomes shorter than you expected.
- Your hair feels bulky in some areas and flat in others.
- Your curls lack shape or definition.
- Your hairdresser cuts your curls as though they’re straight.
- You spend too much time trying to recreate your salon result.
These experiences don’t necessarily mean there’s something wrong with your hair. They may simply mean its natural behaviour hasn’t been fully considered.
Beautiful curls begin with observation.
Introducing the Shizen Method
A Different Philosophy of Haircutting
After more than four decades behind the chair, I’ve learned that the most beautiful haircuts don’t always begin with a technique. They begin with understanding.
The Shizen Method is my personal approach to haircutting, inspired by Japanese principles of naturalness, harmony and refined craftsmanship.
At its heart is Shizen (自然) — naturalness. The belief that beautiful hair should feel authentic to the person wearing it, rather than being forced into a predetermined style.
Within this philosophy is Nagare (流れ) — flow. Nagare guides how I observe and work with the natural movement of hair, whether straight, wavy, curly or coily.
For curly hair, that means considering:
- Natural curl formation and spring
- Growth direction and movement
- Density and distribution of weight
- The relationship between layers and shape
- How curls behave when dry
- How the haircut will work in everyday life
Sometimes curls need more movement. Sometimes they need their natural weight preserved. And sometimes the most important decision is knowing what not to cut.
The highest expression of craftsmanship is when the craftsmanship disappears.
Real Curls. Considered Results.
A Beautiful Shape That Respects Natural Movement
These photographs demonstrate the difference that thoughtful shaping and styling can make to naturally curly silver hair. Notice the relationship between the curls, the distribution of volume and the overall silhouette.

The objective isn’t to make every curl identical. It’s to create a harmonious shape that celebrates the hair’s natural individuality. Your curls, beautifully yours.
What Happens During Your Shizen Cut?
1. We Begin With Understanding
Before reaching for the scissors, I take time to understand your hair. We’ll discuss your natural curl pattern, previous haircut experiences, styling routine, preferred length and what you’d like to achieve.
I’ll observe how your hair naturally falls, moves and responds. This consultation helps establish a shared understanding of the result we’re working towards.
2. A Haircut Designed Around Your Natural Flow
Rather than following a predetermined curly haircut formula, I consider your individual curl formation, density, spring and movement. The cutting approach is selected according to your hair’s needs. This may involve working with the hair dry, wet or through a combination of techniques.
The aim is to create a considered, balanced shape that respects your natural texture.
3. Refinement and Natural Styling
Your curls are assessed as the shape develops, with attention to movement, balance and how they sit naturally. Where appropriate, we’ll discuss styling techniques and suitable products to help you understand and manage your curls at home.
Because a beautiful haircut should be something you can enjoy beyond your appointment.
Beautiful Curls Shouldn’t Require a Complicated Routine
One of the biggest frustrations I hear about curly hair is how difficult it can feel to manage. Too many products. Too many techniques. Too much time.
I believe haircare should support your lifestyle, not control it. Whether you enjoy carefully defining your curls or prefer a simpler wash-and-style approach, your haircut should take your daily routine into consideration.
There’s no universal product combination or styling technique that works for everyone. The right approach depends on your hair’s characteristics, condition and the result you want to achieve.
My aim is to help you better understand your own hair, rather than overwhelm you with unnecessary complexity.
Curly Hair at Every Age
Embracing What You’re Becoming
Natural texture can change throughout our lives. Some women notice changes in curl formation, density, dryness or manageability as their hair matures. Grey and silver curls can also have their own individual characteristics.
These changes deserve understanding rather than resistance.
As a specialist in sophisticated grey coverage, grey blending and natural-looking colour, I particularly enjoy helping women embrace their evolving hair. Whether you’re celebrating naturally silver curls, transitioning away from permanent colour or simply wanting a haircut that feels more like you, the philosophy remains the same: embracing what you’re becoming.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you cut curly hair dry or wet?
Both approaches can have value. I choose the cutting method according to your hair’s curl formation, condition, density and desired shape. The Shizen Method is guided by observation rather than a single prescribed technique.
Can you cut wavy hair as well as curly hair?
Absolutely. Nagare, the principle of natural flow, applies to all hair textures, including straight, wavy, curly and coily hair. Every haircut is considered individually.
Will my curls become shorter after cutting?
Curly hair naturally contracts as it dries, and the amount of shrinkage varies. We discuss your preferred finished length during consultation and consider your curl’s natural spring when designing the haircut.
Can a haircut eliminate frizz?
Not entirely. Frizz can be influenced by humidity, hair condition, damage, styling techniques and product choices. A considered haircut may improve the overall shape and manageability of your hair, while suitable care and styling can help address frizz.
Do you specialise in grey and silver curly hair?
Yes. I have extensive experience with grey coverage, grey blending and natural-looking colour, and I enjoy working with naturally grey and silver hair. Haircutting and colour services can be discussed according to your individual needs.
How often should curly hair be cut?
There’s no single schedule that suits everyone. It depends on your haircut, length, condition, growth and how well the shape maintains itself. Some clients prefer more regular refinement, while others can comfortably wait longer between appointments.
Where is your atelier located?
My private hair atelier is located in Deception Bay, Queensland, welcoming women from North Lakes, Rothwell, Redcliffe, Mango Hill, Caboolture and surrounding Brisbane Northside communities.
Your Curls Deserve to Be Understood
You don’t need to fight your natural texture. You don’t need a haircut designed for somebody else’s curls. And you don’t need to spend every morning trying to make your hair behave differently.
You deserve a haircut that begins with understanding who you are and how your hair naturally lives. At my private atelier, that’s where every Shizen Cut begins.
Beautiful hair isn’t about changing who you are. It’s about revealing what’s naturally yours.
