Hair care for swimming and time outdoors
Pool water, salt water, sun and wind can leave hair feeling dry or tangled. These simple steps can make post-swim care easier.
Before you swim
Wet your hair with fresh water first when possible. Saturated hair may take up less pool or salt water. If you tie it back, use a soft tie and avoid pulling it tightly; a loose braid can help limit tangling for longer hair.
After swimming
Rinse with fresh water as soon as you can. If your hair feels coated or you swim often, use a cleanser suited to your scalp and follow with conditioner on the lengths. A leave-in conditioner may help with detangling if your hair tends to knot.
Detangle gently
Hair can be more vulnerable to stretching when wet, so press out excess water with a soft towel and detangle carefully from the ends upwards. Use fingers or a wide-tooth comb and take your time.
Use heat thoughtfully
Let hair air-dry when convenient, or use a dryer on a comfortable setting with heat protectant as directed. If you use hot tools, keep the temperature moderate and limit repeated passes.
Choose occasional deep cleansing carefully
A clarifying or chelating shampoo may help remove residue after repeated swimming or mineral exposure. It is not needed for everyone or on a fixed weekly schedule. Follow the product directions and condition afterwards if your hair feels dry.
