Curly Haircuts: Shape, Length and Care for Your Natural Texture

Curls have their own pattern, weight and movement. A haircut that respects those details can help the shape feel balanced without asking you to change the way you naturally wear your hair. At my private atelier, we start with your goals and the time you want to spend styling, then choose the cutting approach that suits your texture.

What makes a curly cut personal?

Curl pattern can vary across one head of hair. Density, shrinkage, length, previous colour, and the way you dry your hair also affect the finished shape. Before cutting, I want to know what you enjoy about your curls, what feels difficult, and how much length you wish to keep.

Seeing curls dry can help me judge where they sit naturally and how much length they appear to lose as they spring up. Depending on the hair and the planned shape, I may work dry, wet, or with a combination. The method serves the result; it is not a promise that one technique suits every curl.

Shape, length and weight

For medium to long curly hair, retaining enough weight can be just as important as removing it. Layers may create movement, but their position and amount need to suit your density and styling routine. We discuss the outline you want around your face and shoulders, then refine the cut with the curls in view.

If you want to understand the technique further, see why I use dry cutting as part of a personalised haircut.

Caring for curls between appointments

  • Cleanse the scalp when it needs it, then condition the lengths according to how your hair feels. There is no universal number of days between washes.
  • Detangle gently, often while conditioner gives the hair slip, using your fingers or a suitable wide-tooth comb.
  • Try styling on damp hair and let the curls settle before touching them too much. A diffuser on a comfortable heat setting can be useful if you prefer to dry them.
  • Notice how your shape grows out. Bring photos of your everyday hair to the next appointment so we can adjust it together.

Products are chosen for your hair and routine, rather than a fixed “curl kit.” If you use colour, we also consider how to keep the condition and upkeep manageable.

A considered appointment

The private atelier in Deception Bay offers time to discuss the result you want without rushing to a standard curl formula. My aim is a shape that feels like your hair, with practical advice you can use once you are home.
