There is no single wash schedule that suits every head of hair. Your scalp, styling habits, colour, and the weather all affect when your hair feels ready to be cleansed. The useful question is simple: how does your scalp and hair feel between washes?
How often should you wash your hair?
Wash when your scalp feels oily or uncomfortable, or when sweat and styling products have built up. For some people that means daily or every other day; others are comfortable waiting several days. A routine that leaves your scalp comfortable and your lengths manageable is more useful than a fixed rule based on hair type.
Fine hair can look oily sooner because a little oil is more visible. Dense or textured hair may take longer to feel coated, while exercise and Queensland humidity can change the rhythm from week to week. You can adjust without worrying that you have broken a hair-care rule.
Is washing every day bad for your hair?
Daily washing is not automatically a problem. If you need it and your scalp feels comfortable, use a shampoo that cleanses without leaving your lengths rough, and follow with conditioner where your hair needs it. If your hair feels dry after each wash, reconsider the product, water temperature, or how much shampoo you use before assuming that every wash is harmful.
Dry shampoo can refresh a style temporarily, but it does not cleanse the scalp. When your roots feel coated, wash them.
What if your hair is coloured or greying?
Colour-treated hair needs a routine that keeps it comfortable and looking good between appointments. Frequent washing, hot water, and heat styling can affect the way colour looks over time, but stretching washes beyond what feels clean is not the answer for everyone. Choose a rhythm that works for your scalp and ask your colourist which products suit your particular colour and hair condition.
If you are considering grey blending or full grey coverage, the upkeep of your colour matters as much as the initial result. We can discuss how your wash routine and the interval between visits fit the look you want.
A simple wash routine
- Wet the hair thoroughly. Apply shampoo to the scalp and massage gently with your fingertips; the rinse will carry it through the lengths.
- Rinse well. If your scalp still feels coated after a lot of styling product, a second gentle cleanse may help.
- Apply conditioner mainly to the mid-lengths and ends, then rinse as the product directs.
- Blot with a towel rather than rubbing. Detangle with care and use heat protection when styling with hot tools.
When should you change your routine?
Notice how your hair behaves over a few washes. If the roots become oily quickly, try washing sooner. If the lengths feel rough, check your cleanser, conditioning, and heat routine. Persistent itching, flaking, pain, or sudden shedding deserves advice from a qualified health professional; a change in wash frequency alone may not address it.
